Time Machine and MBP total data size mismatch. Is time machine backing everything up or not?

Hi Folks - My Time Machine drive indicates it's backed up 120GB of data yet my MBP has 230GB of data stored on it. Is there a back up problem with this near 100GB mismatch? I'm new to time machine and this is my first back-up. I have a MBP 2013 running OSX vers 10.8.5, 2.4GHZ Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM and a 250GB hard drive. I verified my disk and it appears to be running fine. I had a cursory glance in my back up and nothing obvious appears to be missing and I did not exclude anything from being backed up but this data mismatch is concerning and would welcome your comments please. Thanks.

Are you basing this on the size of the backup file? Check System Preferences/Time Machine/Options to make sure nothing is excluded.

Hi Eric - Thanks for your assistance and apologies for my late response. I did discover what you suggested and sure enough I noticed some large folders had been flagged by TM to be excluded. I say this accounted pretty much for the mismatch in data sizes and so consider this question solved.
